Temperatures are set to drop as low as -3C on Wednesday night as Met Éireann says frost and icy patches are expected.
However, milder and “rather unsettled weather” is expected later in the week, with temperatures forecast to climb into the low teens.
Wednesday will see the mercury rise to highs of just 7C, however it will plummet tonight to lows of -3C.
The forecaster said it will be dry overnight but it will be cold “with widespread frost and some icy patches”.
Fog will develop once again, turning dense in some areas. While it will be cold, it will become “less cold in Munster with the arrival of the rain”.
Thursday will begin with “some hazy sunshine in the north and east but it will be a cloudy and damp start in the south and west with outbreaks of rain”.
“Rain and drizzle will spread across most of the country through the afternoon but rainfall totals will be small in the east and northeast.” Temperatures, however, are expected to rise to highs of 13C.
It will remain cloudy and breezy on Thursday night with outbreaks of rain and drizzle across the west of the country, while further east it will stay largely dry apart from “the odd spot” of rain or drizzle.
Thursday night will be a “mild night with lowest temperatures of 9C to 12C”.
Friday, polling day in the general election, is “set to be a cloudy and rather damp day” with outbreaks of rain pushing northwards over the country. Scattered showers will follow in southern and western counties during the evening.
Temperatures will reach highs of 14C with the weather remaining mild.
Saturday and Sunday will continue the trend of mild conditions with outbreaks of rain, but some sunny spells can be expected on Sunday afternoon.
