Strong thermal contrast at the end of the week from north to south: from autumn to spring

The month of November will soon end, and despite the very short-lived cold snap last weekend, it is now certain that this month of November 2024 will end up with a surplus in terms of temperatures. Indeed, this final week will generally remain mild, even if a big thermal contrast will gradually set in towards the weekend.

The return of anticyclonic conditions on a European scale

After several disrupted days, it is the anticyclone which will return to influence the weather for this final week of November. Its heart will develop over Germany at the end of the week, making it possible to protect almost the entire country from Atlantic disturbances which will have to bypass the anticyclone via the British Islands and the Scandinavian countries.

With these new conditions, the weather will be much calmer with the cessation of precipitation. However, as is often the case in the autumn season, there will be many low clouds over the northern half, with some mists or fogs which will struggle to dissipate due to the absence of wind.

Very different temperatures and feelings between the north and the south

If the conditions in the sky will be generally similar across with calm and dry weather, this will not be the case on the thermometer. Closest to the anticyclone in the northeast, the frequent low clouds and the light cold continental easterly wind should accentuate the wintry feeling, and thus limit the rise in temperatures during the afternoon. Despite this calm weather, you will need to cover up well in these regions if you have outdoor activities to plan.

In the south, on the other hand, and as usual during these anticyclonic situations, the atmosphere looks truly spring-like. The sun promises to be generous, and a light south-east wind will accompany you, enough to make the atmosphere dry and pleasant. Thanks to clear skies, the thermometer could easily rise in the afternoon, particularly in the southwest where the 20°C mark could be approached, or even exceeded if the Foehn effect takes hold.

This calm situation should not last over time, according to our models. Indeed, the anticyclone over Central Europe will tend to retract, giving way to Atlantic depressions to return towards the country from the west, with increasingly deteriorating weather.

In any case, this change will not affect the thermometer, with mildness still present across the entire country in preparation for the start of December. No signs of cold weather are in sight at the moment, much to the chagrin of mountain winter sports resorts, which are desperately awaiting snow in preparation for the Christmas holidays.
