The success of Călin Georgescu in the first round of the presidential elections in Romania did not go unnoticed by the Russian mass media. The candidate is described as the surprise of the elections, in short materials, mainly reproduced from international press agencies. The small portrait that Russian journalists have made of Georgescu focuses on his affinity for an alliance with Russia and underlines a statement by him regarding the fact that NATO membership does not guarantee Romania's safety.
“Georgescu's results were a surprise, as the polls gave him little chance. He campaigned on TikTok, supported traditional values, but also glorified Romania's army, which sided with the Nazis in World War II, and believes that NATO membership cannot guarantee Romania's security, pleading for an alliance with Russia”, the Ria Novosti agency wrote about Călin Georgescu, in a news story also quoted by the website of the daily newspaper Kommersant.
Ria Novosti also reviewed, in the first hours after the polls closed, the results obtained by Călin Georgescu in several counties in Romania.
The news appeared in TASS
“Călin Georgescu, 62 years old, is an agronomist by training. In the mid-2000s, he became head of department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then held various positions at the UN in the field of environmental protection. Georgescu was repeatedly nominated for the position of prime minister, being an expert in sustainable development issues, but was never officially proposed. Georgescu has been criticized for his nationalist views, being cautious about Romania's participation in NATO and cautious about normalizing relations with Russia. He was briefly a member of the nationalist party Alliance for the Union of Romanians, but later left it. It is said that his electoral success is due to a successful campaign on TikTok,” the state agency Tass.ru also wrote, quoting an AFP story.
Călin Georgescu's victory was also reported by the Western press, which used words such as “shock”, “earthquake” and “surprise” to describe the election result.
At the time of writing, the battle for second place in the second round of the presidential election is still ongoing. The difference between Marcel Ciolacu and Elena Lasconi decreases as the diaspora votes are centralized, currently standing at 0.01%.
