Farioli opens up about setup; Berghuis in midfield and Taylor on left winger

Francesco Farioli opened up about the role of Steven Berghuis before Ajax's home match against PEC Zwolle. According to the Italian, the left foot will start in midfield, while Kenneth Taylor will act as a left winger. In this way, Farioli hopes to be able to compensate for the loss of Mika Godts.

Reporter Cristian Willaert van ESPN Farioli asks whether Berghuis and Taylor are positioned as midfielder and left winger respectively. The coach initially tries to avoid the question, but is then honest. “You read my mind,” Farioli replies.

Farioli says he is happy to be able to give Berghuis some extra minutes. 'He has already been able to make some minutes in the previous matches. During the international break he has had time to build up his fitness. He feels good and we have decided to start with him.'

Ajax are missing three key players in Spain

During next Thursday's away match against Real Sociedad, Farioli will have to make do without Taylor (suspension), Godts (injury) and Davy Klaassen (not eligible to play). The trainer indicates that he is looking for alternatives. 'We go to San Sébastian without three important players, so we will have to come up with solutions. We will have to be ready, but tonight's match (Sunday, ed.) is the most important and we are putting the best possible players on the field.'

'If players are missing, you have to make sure you reform yourself. Some players can also fill other roles and bring other things. But all the players in action tonight have worked well over the past week. I look forward with confidence to tonight's performance.'

Even after Ajax's successful series, Farioli guards against laxity. 'For me it is important that you keep confidence and overconfidence separate. At the beginning of the season it was important to find confidence. We are improving in that area, but you have to be careful not to go overboard. We have to be aware of that. There is no room for overconfidence where we want to go.'
