In Iceland, a new volcanic eruption began during the night of Wednesday November 20 to Thursday November 21. The town of Grindavik on the Reykjanes peninsula had to be completely evacuated.
The setting is almost unreal: a cloud of fire in the sky and a blackened landscape on earth. Iceland woke up on Thursday, November 21 to a volcanic eruption in the Reykjanes Peninsula, the seventh in one year in the area. Lava tears through the peninsula again, devouring roads at a rate of 1,300 m3 per second and the parking lot of the famous Blue Lagoon hotel. “This is a major natural disaster. The damage to the road network is considerable“, said the Sudurnes police chief.
The residents of the town of Grindavik, already evacuated last year, will have to leave their homes, once again, as quickly as possible, without knowing when they will return. According to authorities, the eruption is decreasing in intensity.
