Doubtful for the Las Vegas Grand Prix after a violent accident in qualifying, Franco Colapinto received the medical green light. The Argentinian will be at the start of the race this Sunday morning at 7 a.m. (Saturday evening in the United States).
During Q2 yesterday, the Williams driver made a mistake by hitting the wall at turn 16, causing an impressive off-track in which he destroyed his car. If he got out of his cockpit under his own power, he was immediately transported to the circuit medical center as a precaution due to the shock exceeding 50 g.
Franco Colapinto had to undergo further tests a few hours before the race to ensure he did not suffer any concussion. All risk having now been ruled out, he was authorized by the doctors to run this Sunday.
“Franco's health is our priority and we are all relieved that he is well enough to be able to race after such a major accident.”his team announced. “We would like to thank the medical staff for being concerned about Franco's health and for taking extremely good care of him.”
This accident also placed a lot of work on the shoulders of the Williams team's mechanics, who were already in heavy demand in recent weeks. However, they managed to repair their driver's car so that he would be able to defend his chances this Sunday. Initially 14th on the starting grid, Franco Colapinto will however start from the pit lane.
“We are extremely grateful to our incredible team of mechanics for their hard work overnight to repair the car, and to our fans and partners for their continued support.”insists the Grove team. “We took the opportunity to make set-up changes during the repairs and as a result, Franco will start the race from the pitlane.”
On the other Williams, Alexander Albon was eliminated in Q1 and will start from 17th place.
