Götze writes about birth drama
Mario Götze has provided deep insights into one of the hardest moments of his life. In an emotional letter to his children Rome (4) and Gioia (1) on the portal “The Players' Tribune”, the 2014 world champion reported on the dramatic birth of his son in the summer of 2020. During a routine examination, his wife Ann-Kathrin had one Midwife discovered problems, described Götze. The child's heartbeat was too slow. As Götze further described, the doctors then delivered the child by caesarean section, six weeks early. Götze was faced with a decision: stay with his newborn son or go to training at BVB. Due to the pandemic regulations at the time, he would not have been allowed to enter the hospital after leaving. “I had to decide: football or family,” wrote Götze. “I called the club and explained that I couldn't come to training until you were 100 percent healthy. And in the end I never went back.” Götze's contract expired a little later, and after a short time without a club he signed with PSV Eindhoven.
