NYSEG, Dept. of Transportation prepare for the winter season

BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — With the arrival of the winter season, NYSEG and the New York State Department of Transportation are getting prepared.

In turn, they said they want to make sure the public is as well. Around a foot of snow is expected to fall in parts of the Southern Tier Thursday evening into Friday morning.

DOT Public Information Specialist Region 9 Daniel Scharfenberger said the team has been getting ready for snow for weeks.

“Working on their trucks, working on everything to be ready for these snow events,” said Scharfenberger. “So, everybody is ready to go.”

Scharfenberger said motorists should stay back at least 100 feet from snow plows and not attempt to pass them while they are operating.

NYSEG Communication Manager Alexis Arnold said the best way to keep yourself safe is to stay indoors. She noted that staying inside creates a safer working environment for their crews to work more efficiently.

While at home, Arnold wanted to make sure that residents were stocking up on essentials.

“This is a good reminder to make sure you have flashlights and fresh batteries on hand,” Arnold said. “You want to make sure that you have fresh water and non-perishable foods to have in the house for a few days.”

She also advised people to charge up their devices.
