Kentuckiana will pick up a good deal of cold air, gusty winds and even some light snowfall. Here is what we can expect for our area on Thursday.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Right on schedule for this time of year, Mother Nature is providing the Louisville Metro area with its first chance for light snowfall on Thursday.
A fairly strong storm system is diving in from our north bringing wind, a light wintry mix, and the coldest temperatures of the season so far to Kentuckiana.
Here’s when Louisville normally picks up our first light snow amounts of the fall and winter seasons.
Keep in mind, our ground temperatures are too warm or any significant snow accumulations. If any brief light snow showers were to stick, then they would be confined to grassy and elevated surfaces Thursday evening into Thursday night.
WHAS11 is issuing a Weather Impact Alert Day for Thursday because the strong wind and cold air combined with the passing snowflakes will make for a “shock to the system.” Many of us have not experienced this sort of weather pattern since last winter, so it is important that you dress in layers and take the necessary measures to combat the cold temperatures.
Timing
A first round of flurries moved through this morning with minimal impacts, as ground temperatures remained well above freezing.
A more robust round of wintry mix rotates in from the north this evening. Wet roads and a few spots of limited visibility are possible due to flying flakes.
Ground temperatures will still be a limiting factor, but minor accumulations are possible on grassy surfaces – especially north and east of Louisville where a Winter Weather Advisory has been issued. Here, a trace to an inch of accumulation is possible.
Temperatures & Wind
Reinforcing cold air will keep temperatures in the 30s and low 40s across Kentuckiana all day Thursday. In fact, many of us likely experienced our daily high temperature right around Midnight!
Wind gusts 25 to 35 mph will make the day feel even colder, dropping wind chills into the 30s and 20s. It’s important you bundle up all throughout Thursday, as no real improvement in temperatures is expected.
Outside of a passing flurry or sprinkles, conditions will dry out Friday, but the day will remain gloomy and brisk.
A much quieter, mild weekend lies ahead after we deal with this mid to late week blast of winter chill.
