Deep „Quiteria“ meets Bayern: “Strong Snowfall” expected
First report from November 21st: Munich – According to the German Weather Service (DWD), the depression “Quiteria” will reach the Free State later today. The current weather report says: “A low moving from Brittany to northern Italy is increasingly influencing the weather in the south of the Free State in the evening”. This is accompanied by, among other things, heavy snowfalls.
Official storm warning of “heavy snowfall” in Bavaria – DWD with urgent warning
The DWD also writes that there may be snow showers during the day on Thursday, November 21st. In the evening and night of Friday, November 22nd, “some heavy snowfall in the south” is expected.
First of all, the meteorologists warn of slippery conditions for all of Bavaria. In the low mountain ranges there was around three centimeters of fresh snow in some places. As the day progresses it becomes really wintry: “Snowfall starts from the southwest in the late afternoon, spreading over the southern half of Bavaria as the evening progresses. There will be a lot of slippery snow there until Friday morning.”
The weather experts write about the expected amounts of snow: “In the area around the Danube 1 to 5, in the northern and eastern foothills of the Alps, 5 to 10 cm of fresh snow. In the southwest of Bavaria, amounts over 10, in the western foothills of the Alps over 15, and towards Allgäu and Lake Constance 20 to 30 cm. The north of the Free State, on the other hand, will be spared; only isolated slippery conditions can be expected there.

DWD warning map shows affected regions
The exact region where the heaviest snowfall occurs is marked on the German Weather Service’s warning map. This is the southwest of the Free State. The DWD’s second highest severe weather warning level applies between Oberstdorf, Landsberg and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It says: “Heavy snowfall with amounts between 15 cm and 25 cm will occur during the warning period. It spreads smoothly.” Around Oberstdorf, even 40 centimeters can be reached in traffic jams.
The third highest severe weather warning level applies in other southern regions of Bavaria, and Munich is also affected. Here the meteorologists write: “Snowfall with amounts between 10 cm and 15 cm will occur during the warning period. It spreads smoothly.”
However, the weather reports from the DWD also say that the snow will retreat to the Alps from Friday, meaning the situation will then ease somewhat. (fhz)
