TBM earns $28,950 from sale of three small properties

Two properties in Thornbury and one in Clarksburg will be sold to raise extra cash for the town, other properties could be sold in the future

The Blue Mountains council has approved three sales of surplus land that will add $28,950 to municipal coffers.

At its committee of the whole meeting on Nov. 18, council voted in favour of three reports recommending the sale of three different pieces of property that have been declared surplus by the town. The sales will bring in $28,950 in proceeds. The purchasers of the properties have agreed to pay all taxes and legal, survey and land transfer fees.

The town has been looking at the possibility of selling surplus land to raise extra cash for the municipality. A year ago, CAO Shawn Everitt presented council with a report that identified 11 pieces of property that could possibly be sold.

In June 2024, council approved moving forward with the next steps to sell 10 of those properties. One property was removed from consideration after legal ownership of the land could not be determined.

At the meeting, council approved three separate reports to initiate the first sales of property.

The first report dealt with the Cedar Street road allowance off of Bay Street in Thornbury. Council approved selling a small portion of the allowance to the owners of 95 Bay Street in order to address an existing setback issue. The sale will bring in $13,225. Everitt noted that further sales of the road allowance could be forthcoming now that council has approved the first move to address the setback situation.

The second property is a small laneway off of Leming Street in Thornbury. The small laneway will be sold to three adjacent neighbouring property owners and will bring in $12,000 in proceeds.

The third property is a landlocked parcel behind 150 Clark Street. Everitt explained that town staff found that the small parcel was once part of the Collingwood Township firehall in Clarksburg, but was always a separate lot. The firehall property was eventually sold to a private owner, but the second lot remained in the ownership of the town.

The property will be sold to the owner of 150 Clark Street for $16,950. Everitt noted that the septic system for 150 Clark Street is located on the lot that the town will sell.
