Weather for Thursday, November 21: snow on the plains and stormy winds

Matin

The depression arrives quickly from the Atlantic coast with a clear strengthening of the wind. Gusts already exceed 100 km/h on the Vendée coast and Charente-Maritime. The rains are active and turn into snow on the Arrée mountains and the first 300 m reliefs. In the east, the weather remains calm and dry for the moment. Note that the wind will be calm in the Mediterranean after the stormy episode of the day before.

The temperatures are very contrasting: -1°C in the Ardennes at daybreak compared to 14°C already in .

Afternoon

The depression passes right through with strong agitation. The wind rushes into the central-western lands with gusts exceeding 90 km/h, with lots of rain. Some rain also reaches the Gulf of Lion. Over the northern half, cold air rushes in with an area of ​​snow on the plain between Lower and southern Alsace. To the north of this area, it does not snow, but it is cold with an unpleasant northeast wind.

The contrast in temperatures is striking on either side of this depression. While it will be difficult to thaw in the Ardennes, with 1°C at most, it will be 17°C under a southwesterly flow over the Basque country.

Soirée

The disturbance is evacuated towards the east with snowfall in Burgundy and Franche-Comté. At the rear, the air becomes much colder and it is already freezing near the northern borders.

Trend of the next days

The cold will prevail on Friday with a risk of icy conditions in the northern half. This cold will be very temporary since a sudden mild spell is expected for this weekend.
