Pellistri’s Clear Chance for Uruguay in First Half Against Brazil in Qualifiers: Watch the Play

Publisher: El País

Uruguay is bidding farewell to the 2024 South American Qualifiers, facing Brazil in Salvador de Bahia. Only two points separate both teams in the standings as they aim for a spot in the 2026 World Cup in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. After the first half, La Celeste had only one clear goal-scoring opportunity, falling to the feet of Facundo Pellistri.

During the first 45 minutes, the Canarinha possessed the ball more, but the team managed by Marcelo Bielsa was diligent in its marking, showing great effort and managing to avoid serious danger, except for a few through balls from the home team that required intervention from Uruguayan goalkeeper Sergio Rochet and a header by Igor Jesus before halftime.

Each time Uruguay regained possession, they found opportunities to transition from defense to attack, and they were able to build up some counter-attacks. The clearest chance came from the Panathinaikos player.

At the 20-minute mark of the match in Salvador de Bahia, Marcelo Saracchi led an attack down the left wing, involving all three wingers of La Celeste. Maximiliano Araújo received the ball inside the box and passed it to Darwin Núñez, who crossed it back again.

Facundo Pellistri then received the ball after making a diagonal run from right to left in the attack, controlled it with his right foot, but the shot came off his left foot. The Celeste winger positioned himself to shoot but missed the opportunity, allowing the Canarinha to avoid conceding.
