He had nothing to do there. A great white shark was observed in the waters of Porquerolles, off the Var coast. The specialists confirmed that the shark was a Carcharodon carcharias, a white shark measuring approximately four meters, an endangered species less and less present in the Mediterranean. He showed the tip of his fin just 600 meters from the coast, under the boat of an amateur fisherman.
“As I returned slowly, I was at the point of Porquerolles, I saw a fin in the water at constant speed. So, I diverted to go see it,” says Henri Cavillon, a 67-year-old fisherman. “I stop 15 or 20 meters away, and I cut the engine. No more sound, no more noise, no more vibration. And there, the animal slowly comes back towards me, still at the same pace, calm. He goes around the boat, goes under it, goes around the boat againalways quietly”.
“I shoot, I take photos. I think it’s between 3m5 and 4m5. It's very big compared to my boat. It's gray above, we see a little white below. I had the impression that the animal was injured on the side. Nor was he dying or in distress. It just seemed very calm, but I imagine that this is normal behavior for a shark of this size,” continues the fisherman. “We feel that it is a shark that is special. These are not all pretty, cute, blue-skinned or white-finned sharks. We feel like it’s a huge beast.”
