VIDEO – This species, classified as critically endangered, has almost disappeared from the Mediterranean.
A white shark (Carcharodon carcharias, its scientific name) was seen in the waters of the Port-Cros national park (Var) at the beginning of November. The specimen measures between 3.5 and 4.5 meters long.
This video was captured by a fisherman and sent to the Elasmed observatory of the Ailerons association. The images show the shark walking off the islands of Porquerolles and Port-Cros and approaching a boat, before revealing a fin in broad daylight.
“Great news”
These images were then transmitted to the National Museum of Natural History which confirmed that it was indeed a great white shark. This species, classified as critically endangered, has almost disappeared from the Mediterranean. “This is great news.”rejoiced the Emergence association on Facebook, which works for the conservation of animal species.
If scientists welcome this discovery, they wonder about the reasons for its presence. Was the shark lost in the waters? Or is this a new sign of global warming?
