Death of Charles Dumont: the songwriter had family in Limousin

It is one of the best-known songs in the French repertoire, and that of Edith Piaf. “Je ne regrette rien”, released in 1960, was composed by Charles Dumont. The songwriter passed away on the night of this Sunday to Monday, at the age of 95, Florence, his partner, announced to AFP.

Charles Dumont was born in Cahors, but a large part of his family lived in Eymoutiers, in Haute-. A Limousin land to which the singer is very attached.

If the iconic title of the French song is to the composer's credit, he will have signed a total of around thirty pieces for Edith Piaf. However, before that, the composer had long had to endure refusals from the icon of French song.

Piaf, but also other big names in song. Dalida, Tino Rossi but also Barbra Streisand. At the end of the 1960s, he converted to “crooner“. In 1973, with his album “A woman“, he won the Charles-Cros academy prize. At the Eiffel Tower theater in 2019, he made his last appearance on stage.

He died last night at his home following a long illness.
