Here are the faces and backgrounds of the three Charente farmers competing in the Mister Agricole competition

Ambroise Billy is 18 years old. He lives in Marcillac-Lanville. He is pursuing a BTS in agricultural equipment engineering at l'Oisellerie. “I plan to pursue a degree with the wish to take over, when he retires, my father-in-law's goat farm: 450 heads.”

“Restore the image of the profession”

His motivation for the competition? “Restore the image of our beautiful profession. It also has very good sides. And take advantage of the election to explain to young people in agricultural studies that you have to persevere to succeed.”

Second candidate, Valentin Saulnier. He is 17 years old and lives in Saint-Adjutory. He is also a student at l'Oisellerie, the agro-wine campus in Charente. But he is not a farmer's son. “My grandparents were, not my father. It is also important, as part of this competition, to explain that you can want to get involved in this profession without taking over from your parents' exploitation.

Half of the farmers today are involved outside the family framework,” insists the young man, already certain of wanting to take the helm of a sheep structure.

The third candidate is Jean-Baptiste Chadouteau. Older than the other two – he is 33 – this son of a cereal farmer has a full, complex, chaotic and painful journey. CL told his story in 2023. A first experience in Mouton, around organic market gardening. At the same time, an adventure around a cooperative project, with his partner, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. A flop.

Return to Charente, and another project, in Garat, supported by an association. Which didn't come to fruition. A terrible blow of fate then struck Jean-Baptiste Chadouteau and he does not hide it: the loss of his child, Jasmin. “If I decided to register with Mister Agricole, it is also for him. It would have made him laugh,” explains the man who, today, is employed by a market gardener in Saint-Yrieix. “Keeping your sense of humor, in a light competition, allows you to move forward.” And to send a message: “The agricultural world and those who are not part of it do not understand each other. If Mister agricole can help create a link…”
