Sheinbaum says he will promote Sowing Life at G20 to combat hunger

Mexico City.- In what will be her first participation in a summit of world leaders, the President Claudia Sheinbaum will seek to defend the Fourth Transformation project and export the social programs designed by the former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to solve the problems of hunger and war that occur in the world.

The President will participate tomorrow, Monday in Rio de Janeiro, in the G20 Summit and will take advantage of the initiative of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, promoted by the Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silvato propose the Mexican social agenda.

“What I am going to present at the G20 is mainly the ‘Sowing Life’ program. The proposal is – I will tell you in advance – that spending on arms is reduced a little, just a little; and that, instead of sowing wars, sow life and sow peace. In this way, people’s quality of life improves, poverty decreases, the environment is supported, and migration is even reduced,” Sheinbaum said on November 11.

Sheinbaum will propose to the Presidents and representatives of countries such as the United States, Russia, China, Germany, France and the United Kingdom that fewer resources be spent on the production of weapons and more money be allocated to combat hunger through programs such as Sowing Life.

One of the topics that is expected to be included in the political declaration of the summit is related to the war between Russia and Ukraine, which will probably generate dissent since the former is a member of the G20 and other countries such as China have avoided condemning the invasion. “Many resources are allocated in the world for weapons. In fact, in 2023 they were allocated, depending on how you say the number – because we talk about trillions, our trillions are trillions in the United States – but it is 2.7 trillion dollars that were allocated in the world for weapons in 2023. In recent years, the budget for weapons grew almost three times more, arms production than how the world economy grew, more than 6 percent,” he commented. Sheinbaum last Friday when talking about the tour.

For the President, allocating just one percent of spending on weapons to promote social development would generate a great change and benefit millions of people.

“We are going to defend what our project represents: and also to propose, for example: what would happen if one percent of arms spending were allocated to serving the most needy in the world? (…) And that is What we have to demand in the face of wars, armaments, and that these resources be allocated for the well-being of the most humble people in the world, that is the experience of Mexico, to reorient the budget so that this budget serves for the development of the country.

“So, that is what we are going to present to the G20 with great pride, for what Mexico represents in the world today, and also to vindicate women’s rights and how Mexico has advanced in all this,” commented the past November 8, in his conference at the National Palace.

In addition to his participation in the two tables, Sheinbaum is expected to hold meetings with the Presidents of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva; from France, Emmanuel Macron; and from South Korea, Yoon Suk-Yeol; as well as with the Prime Ministers of Canada, Justin Trudeau; from the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer; from India, Narendra Modi; from Japan, Shigeru Ishiba; and from Vietnam, Pham Minh Chinh.

According to the program, Lula and First Lady Janja Lula da Silva are scheduled to receive the Presidents and Prime Ministers upon their arrival at the Museum of Modern Art, have a working lunch after the first work table and in the evening an official reception.

On Tuesday, the day in which Sheinbaum will no longer participate, the third table “Sustainable development and energy transitions” will take place, then there will be the closing and there will be an official lunch.

As part of the delegation that will accompany the Mexican President are Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente and the Secretary of Energy, Rosa Elena González, who would attend to matters related to the energy transition.

On November 19, the President will travel back to Mexico.
