France “will continue to oppose” Mercosur, assures Emmanuel Macron

Emmanuel Macron spoke on Sunday, in Buenos Aires where he visited President Javier Milei, of his desire to “reassure farmers”. France “will continue to oppose” to Mercosur, a free trade agreement between the European Union and Latin America, assured the Head of State before flying to Brazil where the G20 is to be held. Angry demonstrations by French farmers have already started this Sunday in opposition to this agreement.

“France opposes this agreement. And I will tell you: President (Javier) Milei, he told me himself that he was not satisfied with this agreement”declared Emmanuel Macron. Asked whether the European Union could override the French position, he replied “I don’t think so”saying “recognize the President of the European Commission Ursula Von der Leyen with great respect for France”.

“Putin doesn’t want peace”

The President of the Republic also recalled that Europe must remain “united with Ukrainians” to search “a real peace that is not the capitulation of Ukraine”. “I believe it is clear that President Putin's intentions are to intensify his fighting”he said. “Whatever his declarations, he does not want peace and is not ready to negotiate it”. The priority remains “to equip, support and enable Ukraine to resist”. “The agenda is clear on what needs to be done, then to prepare for what comes next. The Ukrainians asked us clear questions. Can you give us security guarantees and support us? Can we be a guest member of NATO?he continued.
