The MVP of the first NBA Cup, LeBron James, has achieved yet another record. In the Los Angeles Lakers’ victory over the San Antonio Spurs in the second edition of the tournament, James secured another triple-double. Despite not scoring much in the second half, he recorded 15 points, 16 rebounds, and 12 assists. This marks his fourth consecutive triple-double, a feat never accomplished by a forward in the league.
“The best thing about my game is that I may not have much rhythm on offense, but I can still impact the game. So, I managed to do that tonight,” said LeBron James.
While LeBron broke his own record for triple-doubles in the NBA (having never achieved more than three in a row), he also tied John Stockton for the most games played in the league (1504). Furthermore, the star surpassed 57,000 career minutes (regular season only). However, the number 23 jersey still expressed surprise at achieving this milestone in just his twenty-second season.

“It’s hard to still have the energy to do this. But you need great teammates. All the assists only happen when they make the shots. So, I just try to pass the ball on time, play defense, get rebounds, and help the rest of the team. In the meantime, I try to score a few points here and there,” he stated. “But to wait 22 years for this (personal record of triple-doubles) is crazy,” concluded James.
LeBron also matched records set by Russell Westbrook and Magic Johnson with the Lakers. Until now, the two held the record with four consecutive triple-doubles for the team. Currently, he ranks third all-time in the NBA with 117 in his career, while Westbrook leads the league with 199, and Johnson is third with 138. Three-time MVP and leading the race for a fourth award, Nikola Jokic (fourth) is just behind Magic with 136.

“I think when LeBron James is playing like that, it just empowers everyone to make their shots,” said Austin Reaves. “And, of course, Anthony Davis will do what he always does.”
With the victory over the Spurs, the Lakers climbed to fifth place in the West. Meanwhile, in just the 2024/25 NBA season, LeBron has secured his fifth triple-double. It’s worth noting that in the entire previous campaign (71 games), he achieved the same five.
Close to turning 40, LeBron James still does not hold the record for the oldest player to record a triple-double in the NBA, a title held by Karl Malone, who did so at 40 years and 127 days. Against the Spurs, James achieved this at 39 years and 321 days.
