Floods in Spain: details of the aid sent by Morocco

As soon as the Spanish authorities accepted the offer of assistance from Morocco, and Portugal, the kingdom urgently sent a convoy of tankers and dozens of civil protection rescuers. These agents specializing in the restoration of infrastructure will intervene in the Valencia region, hit by storm Dana, which caused devastating floods, enormous damage and more than 200 deaths, reports Al Ahdath Al Maghribia from November 15.

Moroccan rescuers have begun operations to clean out mud, unblock sewers, restore flooded pipes and networks, the Spanish Interior Ministry informed. Morocco was one of the first countries to offer aid after the floods of October 29 on an initiative by King Mohammed VI, according to the same source. The Moroccan community in Spain and certain Moroccan associations also participated in this support campaign through the sending of trucks of food products intended for people affected by bad weather in remote areas.

Several actors from Spanish civil society welcomed the royal initiative. The Spanish writer Adam highlighted the development of relations between the two countries, stressing that the Moroccan people are renowned for their spirit of solidarity, which they demonstrated after the Al Haouz earthquake: “Moroccans have great experience in this area and they can offer valuable assistance to their neighbors“, he stressed.

This extreme weather phenomenon is heading towards Andalusia where it has already caused enormous damage in the city of Malaga. Torrential rains caused massive flooding which submerged the city’s arteries, homes and commercial premises. In Morocco, some fear the arrival of this storm in the north of the kingdom, particularly on social networks. This information was denied by official sources and by the national meteorology department.
