Should we eliminate the energy check, which is a flop?

C’is a surprisingly low cipher. Only 5% of eligible households benefited from their energy check in 2024. Previously automatic, payment of this aid is now made on request. A change in method criticized by associations campaigning for the extension of the duration of access to the digital counter.

According to information from RMC, only 53,000 checks had been sent by the Ministry of the Economy as of November 7. A very low amount compared to the estimated million new people entitled to this aid. Until now, the boost was automatic but because of the abolition of the housing tax, state services are no longer able to identify beneficiary households.

Created in 2016 and generalized in 2018, the energy check replaced the social tariffs for gas and electricity, to help households pay their energy bills. Its amount varies from 48 to 227 euros, and was 148 euros on average in 2020.

How to request your check?

If you had already received an energy check in 2023, Bercy has already thought of you. Normally, the ministry sent you a check last April for the year 2024.

On the other hand, if you did not benefit from the aid last year, you must go to the dedicated site, chequeenergie.gouv.fr, to obtain it this year. Please note: only households whose income per person is less than 11,000 euros in 2022 are eligible. It is also necessary to live in accommodation formerly subject to housing tax.

For the moment, the government platform, which opened on July 4, must close on December 31. However, some associations are asking that the executive extend the deadline for requesting the check. At RMC, the teams of Olga Givernet, the Minister responsible for Energy, ensure that they are examining “all possible means to communicate more effectively and make the counter better known to its potential beneficiaries”. “We are also working to maximize as much as possible the automation of the granting of the check for 2025,” adds the firm to the radio.

In total, 5.6 million households are entitled to the energy check each year.
