Anger of farmers: “Fires in strategic places but far from homes”, announces the FDSEA 31

the essential
Significant disruptions are expected on the roads Monday evening, particularly around and on the main roads of the department. Angry at the lack of support and the threats to their profession, farmers are planning spectacular actions, with fires in the fields and targeted mobilizations. Despite these actions, the organizers assure that they want to avoid any risk for people and property.

Traffic could become particularly difficult on Monday evening near Toulouse and on the department's most important roads. Despite the delays accumulated in the fields due to the unpredictable weather of the last two months, farmers will take to roundabouts and the sides of the highways to express their anger. Laure Serres, president of FDSEA 31, announces initiatives throughout the territory. “It will depend on each canton. Each local organization will freely decide on the actions to take. The idea is to light fires visible to as many people as possible. They will symbolize our fed up, but it is out of the question to put property or people in danger. We will do this far from homes, without risk of fire spreading.

The union leader explains the reasons for this deep discontent: “The promises announced at the start of the year remain unfulfilled to this day! This included increasing farm income to allow farmers to make a decent living from their profession. Nothing has not been done, all sectors combined And regarding the amount of charges, there has been no progress And above all, we are protesting against the imminent signing of the Mercosur treaty, which puts agriculture in mortal danger. French.”

The Muretain on fire?

This free trade treaty with South America could trigger a major crisis, particularly among the Young Farmers who will also participate in this day of mobilization. “There is a major risk for the survival of our farms with this agreement. People are at their wits’ end. The problem is that sometimes, mobilization can serve as an outlet,” warns Thomas Klunker, co-secretary general of JA 31. However, the cereal producer based in Lauragais wants to reassure road users and especially those who work in the Pink City. “There will not be a big demonstration in Toulouse, but targeted actions. However, the pressure could increase once the harvests and sowing are finished,” he warns.

In Muretain in particular, several roundabouts and certain fields will be set on fire. “At 6:45 p.m., we are going to set fire in the fields. The instructions are given: you burn wherever you want!”, indicates Luc Mesbah, secretary general of the FNSEA of 31. Among the roundabouts targeted, the one between Saint -Clar-de-Rivière and Poucharramet, route de Rieumes.
