Prodigy Wembanyama ranks among NBA greats with monster production

NOS SportTuesday, 07:50

With an impressive performance against the Sacramento Kings, basketball player Victor Wembanyama has put himself in the NBA record books among a number of greats.

The only 20-year-old basketball player from San Antonio Spurs last night scored 34 points, 14 rebounds, 6 assists and also blocked 3 shots against the Kings, who were defeated 116-96.

Young NBA star Wembanyama is already in line with Robertson, Abdul-Jabar and Bird

The young Frenchman did that in the 82nd game of his young NBA career. With his production against Sacramento, Wembanyama joined a list of players who recorded 1,700 points, 800 rebounds and 300 assists in their first 82 NBA games (a full season consists of 82 games).

Only Oscar Robertson, Kareem-Abdul-Jabbar, Larry Bird, Blake Griffin and Sidney Wicks preceded him. Wembanyama now has 1,739 points, 871 rebounds and 304 assists.

Hard work

According to his teammate Chris Paul, the basketball world has not yet seen the best of the French prodigy. “I wish everyone could see how hard he works every day,” said the playmaker, who is 19 years older than Wembanyama. “Everyone knows how talented he is, but he has the absolute will to get even better and improve his game.”

Wembanyama was selected first by the Spurs last season in the draft, the annual talent pool from which NBA clubs are allowed to select. In his first season, he averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 3.6 blocked shots in 71 games.

These impressive statistics saw the Frenchman named Rookie of the Year – best newcomer – and finished second in the election for best defender behind his compatriot Rudy Gobert.

The win over Sacramento was the fifth in eleven matches, not yet an impressive start despite the presence of Wembanyama.

The team that started the season best in the NBA’s Western Conference is Oklahoma City Thunder, where the Dutchman Malevy Leons plays.

Despite the loss of talent Chet Holmgren, who will be out for at least two months due to a broken hip, the Thunder won 134-128 against the Los Angeles Clippers last night.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was the big man at Oklahoma City with 45 points, 9 assists, 5 steals and 15 of 16 from the free throw line, where Leons remained sidelined.

The Thunder leads the Western Conference with 9 wins and 2 losses. Cleveland (12-0) is the leader in the Eastern Conference and is the only club in the NBA still undefeated.
