Vendée Globe: Maxime Sorel abandons

This is the first abandonment of this 10th edition after five days of racing. Injured ankle since the second day of racing and having great difficulty placing his foot on the bridge, Maxime Sorel indicated to the race management this Friday, November 15 that he was giving up while he was sheltered from Madeira

“My ankle has been seriously damaged for four days. It only grew over time and with the maneuvers I carried out on board, particularly to try to resolve my major problems with the hook and mainsail.”

Unable to continue sailing in complete safety in this state, the Mayenne skipper therefore decided to throw in the towel. “I let you imagine my physical and mental suffering. I'm abandoning my second Vendée Globe! It was four years of preparation with my team to get to this point. I gave everything I could. This time, my ankle and my mainsail do not allow me to write this sporting and adventurous story that I love deep within me. »

10th in the 2020-2021 Vendée Globe and 5th in the last Route du Rhum, Maxime Sorel also climbed Everest in May 2023.

On the 5th day of racing, it's the Briton Sam Goodchild who at midday leads the fleet south of the Canary Islands ahead of Nicolas Lunven and Boris Hermann
