Robert Ménard and Jean-Michel Aphatie battle it out in bullfighting

Every morning in the RTL morning show, hosted by Amandine Bégot and Thomas Sotto, the sequence “We don't always agree” features a debate between two people about a current topic.

This Thursday, November 14, Robert Menard et Jean-Michel Aphatie faced each other on the station set over the issue “Is Marine Le Pen becoming a martyr of French justice or a litigant like the others? ». Both gave their opinion on this question for several minutes and notably did not agree on the question of the politicization of magistrates.

A little later, Thomas Sotto then launched the two men on another debate: bullfighting. A bill, brought by a Macronist MP, will be studied today in the Senate. “She wants to avoid exposing children to violence and she therefore wants to ban bullfighting for those under 16”explained Amandine Bégot.

“But I wouldn’t care… No kidding…”Robert Ménard immediately reacted before continuing. “I never see kids in bullfights. Second thing, it's the parents who decide. (…) I talk about it freely because I am vegetarian and I don't like bullfighting very much but I defend it staunchly because it is something that must be protected because behind it, there is a threat to bullfighting. Bullfighting is something outside of time, which is the praise of courage, of bravery, of the risk in one's life, of a thousand qualities which are not in keeping with the times.»

Jean-Michel Aphatie then spoke in a completely different sense. He explained that a bull was not trained to fight. “One day he is taken by men, he is put in a truck, he travels for two days and, one Sunday, he is put in an arena. The bull has absolutely no idea where he is or what we want from him. (…) Bullfighting is a rite which leads to the weakening of the bull through a surgical operation without anesthesia”. The political columnist continues his remarks by explaining that a picador, armed with a metal pike, then cuts the ligaments of the bull's neck raw.

“I didn’t know that I was dealing with a bullfighting specialist…”Robert Ménard cut him off. Jean-Michel Aphatie continued by giving other details. “If he could scream, the bull would scream very loudly when we operate on him raw like that. After the torture is not over, banderillas are planted on the bull's back (…). The amendment that I will make to the law is that I would not prohibit bullfighting for those under 16 but for those under 76! »he blurted.

“Honestly, how can we say so much nonsense Jean-Michel?asked Robert Ménard. Everything you say is a bunch of nonsense. There are areas where you know something, there you know nothing. Come on, after all that, take a bull in your face, we'll see if you have the balls to do it! »the mayor of Béziers got angry.

“I won’t have them”replied Jean-Michel Aphatie before returning to his opinion on this activity. “To operate on a bull alive (…) is torture”.
“I hope that after what you have just told us, you don’t eat steak and fries because the steak on your plate is no problem for you…”added Robert Ménard. “We will not agree with you”concluded Amandine Bégot to end the debate.
