Iran, the dissident Sanjari takes his own life in protest after the announcement on X: «Free the political prisoners or I will commit suicide»

The extreme gesture of the 42-year-old journalist raises doubts about his death: «He had just purchased a ticket to the USA. It could be a setup by the regime”

Wikipedia has just been updated. Kianush Sanjari 11 September 1982 – 13 November 2024. The dissident journalist had written it on release will not be published on the judiciary website, I will end my life in protest against Khamenei's dictatorship and his associates.”

Twenty-three hours later, the last post: «I respect the word. No one should be jailed for expressing their opinions. Protest is the right of every Iranian citizen. My life will end after this tweet but let's not forget that we die and die for the love of lifenot of death. I hope that one day Iranians will wake up and overcome slavery.” Then a photo from above, of what would have been his leap into the void: «7 pm, Hafez bridge, Chaharso». Sanjari committed suicide. There remain videos of a body lying on the ground and a vain attempt to resuscitate him.

The journalist asked, prayed via social media that the activists Sepehari and Rezaei, the young woman's mother Nika Shakarami killed by Ayatollah guards in 2022and the rapper Salehi – all political prisoners, all imprisoned without trial – were released, only in this way would he not take the extreme step of taking his own life.

A request with an obvious outcome. The regime doesn't listen to anyone, let alone a journalist, a dissident with a passion for freedom. A forty-two year old who since when He is 17 years old and practiced peaceful dissidence, leaving and entering Evin prison in Tehran.. Sanjari knew in detail the physical and psychological torture perpetrated by the regime, but, friends say, he never stopped believing that one day he would live in a free Iran and democratic. During one of the arrests, he was also locked up in a psychiatric clinic. He told Radio Farda: “Nine times I suffered forced treatment with electric shocks and the injection of substances.”

Thousands of shares of his latest message. «Look at the desperation of the Iranians, we will always be with you»they write on social media. And again: «Life owes me a homeland where I can only think about living, not about my homeland».

But, always among his acquaintances, there are those who raise some doubts: What if Sanjari hadn't taken his own life but it was all a sham by the regime that wanted to kill him? It wouldn't be the first time that the ayatollah's guards faked a suicide to eliminate dissidents. Those who know Sanjari say that he had just purchased a ticket to the United States and that he had never spoken of gestures of this type.

In the past, Sanjari lived in Washington DC where he worked for the opposition Voice of America channel and other human rights organizations. In 2016 he returned to Iran to be close to his sick mother.
