Marco Angulo, the Ecuadorian footballer from Liga de Quito, tragically passed away early this Tuesday after battling for his life in a hospital for over a month following a severe traffic accident 39 days ago. This heartbreaking news has been confirmed by both his club and the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF).
The 22-year-old midfielder, who earned international caps for his national team in 2022, had been in critical condition in a hospital in the Ecuadorian capital until the news of his tragic death emerged this morning.
Angulo collided at high speed with construction barriers on a highway in Quito on October 7. In the vehicle with Angulo were four others; the accident has resulted in the loss of three lives, including fellow footballer Roberto Cabezas Simisterra of Independiente Juniors and Víctor Charcopa Nazareno.
Both the Ecuadorian Football Federation and Liga de Quito have released statements on their social media platforms, expressing their “deepest sorrow” and “profound pain and sadness” in light of this tragic news:

“We regret to inform you of the passing of our beloved player Marco Angulo. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. His departure is an irreparable loss that will leave an indelible mark on our hearts,” lamented the Ecuadorian club.
“We stand in solidarity with his family, teammates, and loved ones, wishing them strength during this very difficult time,” added the Ecuadorian Football Federation. Angulo was part of the provisional squad for Ecuador for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, although he did not make the final cut.
