Bayraktar said, “When artificial intelligence was used in Amazon recruitment processes in 2018, it was seen that men were preferred more than women and that discrimination against women was also copied in artificial intelligence. It is not actually a coincidence that voice assistants are made with a female voice.”
The 6th ‘International Women and Justice Summit’ was held at Haliç University with the theme of ‘Artificial Intelligence and Women’, in cooperation with the Women and Democracy Foundation (KADEM) and the Ministry of Family and Social Services. Answering the questions of journalists after the program, KADEM Board of Trustees Chairman Sümeyye Erdoğan Bayraktar made statements about the reason for the determined theme and the relationship between women and artificial intelligence.
“DISCRIMINATION AGAINST WOMEN HAS BEEN OBSERVED TO BE COPYED IN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE”
Bayraktar said, “Yes, we get this question a lot. How did artificial intelligence and women come together? In fact, this is a very, very important combination. Artificial intelligence is pregnant with serious changes and developments in every field of the world, in every aspect of society. And of course, women.” The field is not separate from this, this will also be affected. As a matter of fact, there were very vivid examples in 2018, when artificial intelligence was used in Amazon recruitment processes, it was seen that men were preferred more than women and a discrimination against women was also copied in artificial intelligence. In a study conducted in the field of justice, where the possibility of criminals committing crimes again was investigated, it was seen that when artificial intelligence was used, there was also a discriminatory view towards women, as well as a discriminatory view based on race. Again, we always say that these things are happening on the one hand. On the other hand, we also see that women are highlighted more in features such as voice assistants and advertisements, by artificial intelligence or by those who shape these technologies. For example, it is not a coincidence that voice assistants are made with a female voice. Here we see that the servant woman’s view and perception is perhaps presented to us again and reinforced here as well. Therefore, such examples are very striking. Right now, we still have a trend that is just taking shape. “And we, as women, must be involved in this, in the decision-making mechanisms,” she said.
“ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE CAN ALSO LEARN THE ATTITUDES OF WOMEN’S RIGHTS DEFENDERS”
Bayraktar said, “Only 22 percent of those working in the field of artificial intelligence and data informatics worldwide are women, and the majority of them are, of course, in lower positions. We will make efforts to find out how these numbers can be increased at first. However, we will make more efforts in training algorithms and shaping artificial intelligence.” How can a fair formation be? Because there may be situations that may create injustice not only for women but also for other social groups. We will be working on this. As we said, we have invited approximately 230 speakers from 62 countries in total. We hosted many guests and had very good discussions. At the end of these, we will publish our policy taxes. How can we take part as an NGO? What kind of projects can we carry out? After all, we will determine our road map. But I see this; if data and algorithms have learned to discriminate against women, there is a whole acquis that women’s rights advocates have put forward for decades, from positive discrimination to gender justice. Therefore, I think artificial intelligence can learn this too. We hope he learns this. “As I said, the important thing is that we have high awareness in this field and that we work in this field,” he said.
