Bryan King was impressed by Will Lankshear’s performance against Galatasaray despite the striker’s “naive” sending-off.
The ex-Spurs scout thought the 19-year-old worked hard and showed a physical presence up front in the UEFA Europa League at RAMS Park on Thursday (7 November).
Lankshear grabbed his first goal at senior level to equalise for Tottenham after the North London side had gone behind. However, his night ended negatively as he was sent off, with Spurs going on to lose 3-2 against Galatasaray in the end.
Nonetheless, King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – was still impressed by Lankshear’s overall play.
“Lankshear’s goal was a good one,” King said.
“To be fair, I thought he did well. He was physical and he got stuck in, although perhaps he was a bit too physical at times. I’d say that he was unlucky to be sent off.
“However, both of his challenges were bookable offences. With the first one, when you raise your arm you’re always going to get booked for that. Strikers cannot lead with their arms, and he did, which was a bit naive.
“As for the second booking, his tackle was late. However, other than that I thought he did well. He worked hard and got his first goal for the club.”
Will Lankshear impresses for Tottenham despite red card against Galatasaray
Lankshear would have felt as though he was on cloud nine when he put the ball in the back of the net. Getting yourself on the scoresheet away at Galatasaray isn’t easy, and for that to be Lankshear’s first goal was rather impressive.
However, in the end, his inexperience showed through two poor challenges, with Keith Hackett having his say on the incident. Therefore, Ange Postecoglou would have no doubt been frustrated.
However, Lankshear’s night mustn’t be defined by his sending off. It was a mistake, but he is still young, and this is something he must learn from.
The 19-year-old demonstrated a lot of promise up until that point, and that is what Postecoglou and Spurs must focus on.
