The weather hasn't been this dry in a long time. Barely have the storms and torrential rains calmed down, large fog banks covered a very large northern half of the country, as we explained in this article.

Only the summits of the Vosges and the Jura emerge. In the south, the gray areas are nevertheless less extensive and the sun shines through more often. So, how long are we going to sail in the fog? We take stock.

An anticyclone “camped on France”

It's because ofan anticyclonewhich has taken over the whole of Western Europe, that such fog has covered France since the end of October. However, “the colder the air, the less water it can contain,” explains meteorologist Guillaume Séchet to actu.fr. Since it's cold right now, the air is already completely saturated.

“With the additional humidity brought by the anticyclone, the clouds are pressed to ground level, which forms banks of fog,” continues the meteorologist.

As long as there is no wind, and this anticyclone remains camped over France, these phenomena should not evolve.

The fog, until when?

“This will persist for a few more days,” estimates the founder of Météo-Villes. The anticyclone covering France, and a large part of Western Europe, will continue to influence the country's climate.

“Its center will shift towards Eastern Europe, but the phenomenon is so widespread that it will continue to influence all the way to the Atlantic,” he explains.

“Until Saturday, at least”, there is little chance of seeing the gray weather lift quickly “in the regions where it has already persisted for several days”, that is to say over a large part of the north-western quarter of France.

What about getting up for good?

This is not until the middle of next weekaround Wednesday November 13, that the situation should really settle down.

“It depends on the trajectory of the cold drop”, a depression which should soon touch France, cause showers, and cool the air temperature. This will “sweep away the gray and humidity in the north-eastern quarter”, summarizes Guillaume Séchet.

According to the meteorologist, “the second part of November will certainly not be as calm as the first”.
