Julien Charles leaves, Jean-Marie Girier arrives: a new prefect for the Pyrénées-Atlantiques

Who says new government often says transfer window of prefects following. There was no shortage of that. And this directly concerns the Pyrénées-Atlantiques.

Indeed, in the Council of Ministers this Wednesday, the appointment of Julien Charles, tenant of the Villa Sainte-Hélène since October 2022, as new prefect of Seine-Saint-Denis was recorded. A path that Pierre-André Durand had also followed before him, in 2016.

This departure will undoubtedly disappoint many elected officials and actors in public life, Julien Charles having been able to be appreciated by many through his tact, his communication, his handling of files.

During his short mandate, he had to deal in particular with agricultural issues, the urban riots of 2023, wolf attacks, housing problems in the Basque Country, the landslide in Laruns or more recently obviously the flood in the valley of Aspe and the collapse of the RN 134.

A Lyonnais who worked with Collomb and Ferrand

It is his successor who will inherit all these subjects, most of which are still in the news. A successor who is not unknown to those who follow politics. This is Jean-Marie Girier, 40 years old.

Prefect of since February 2022, prefect of the Territoire de before that, between 2020 and 2022, he especially entered the media spotlight during Emmanuel Macron's 2017 presidential campaign, of which he was the director. He also actively participated in the creation of En Marche, which became LREM.

After the victory, this native of was chief of staff of the Minister of the Interior Gérard Collomb, also from Lyon, then chief of staff of Richard Ferrand then president of the National Assembly.

It is thus a very political appointment that we are witnessing today, with the arrival at the prefecture of this former member of the PS who became a Macronist.

The date of his taking office is not yet known.
