Facebook: beware of fake news about chemotherapy

Once again Internet users playing with our health : they assure us that chemotherapy is just a “cash machine” for doctors and that the failure rate is 97%.

Of course this figure is false, but it is very popular on Facebook : these posts are seen millions of times! All this comes from a video from an American naturopath. He indicates in his video that an oncologist can get rich quickly thanks to chemotherapies and that it is very profitable. The man relies on a highly contested Australian study, according to which the survival rate for people receiving chemotherapy is 2%. The study only talks about patients who have had cancer for 5 years and is based on figures from the end of the 90s. Furthermore, according to specialists, the calculation in this study is biased. Our colleagues from AFP have analyzed this information, you can find their work via this link.

Lots of “fake news” on health

Our journalist, Aude Raso, even came across a Facebook post stating “eat a frozen lemon and you will be cured”.

Unfortunately, doctors see patients passing by who firmly believe in this “fake news, Facebook and TikTok are having a hard time regulating all these publications.
