“salutes the courage” of the young Iranian woman arrested after undressing

“I salute the courage of this young woman who is showing resistance and has risen to the rank of icon for the fight of women in Iran, for the fight of women wherever their rights are threatened,” declared Mr. Barrot on 2. “Our embassy in Iran is monitoring its situation very carefully and reporting to us hour by hour,” he added without giving further details.

The young woman, a student at the prestigious Azad University in Tehran, was harassed by security agents who believed she was not respecting the strict mandatory Islamic dress code, according to activist groups who revealed the case on Saturday.

She stripped to her underwear in protest and marched outside the university, in a video that went viral, before being violently taken away by security officers. His fate has since been unknown.

“The Iranian authorities must release the young woman immediately and unconditionally,” Amnesty Iran, a branch of Amnesty International, reacted on Saturday to X. The Iranian Fars agency, for its part, reported the incident and published a photo blurred of the student.

“Inappropriate” clothing

According to the agency, the young woman wore “inappropriate” clothing to class and “stripped off” after being warned by security guards. Islamic law in Iran imposes a very strict dress code on women, who are required to wear headscarves and loose clothing that conceals their shapes.
