A “skeletal remains” were found in a house in Moselle. It is the body of the owner, aged 81 and missing for 15 years, the Lorraine Republican learned on Monday November 4.
A chilling surprise. This is what the new owners of a house in Erstroff (Moselle) experienced when they discovered the bones of a man in the outbuilding adjoining the main house. It is in reality the body of the former owner, who has been missing for 15 years, indicated Sarreguemines public prosecutor Olivier Glady, confirming information from the Lorraine Republican.
The body found by mistake by the new owners
The remains “reduced to a skeleton” was discovered during the afternoon of Saturday November 2 while the owners, who have been carrying out work since purchasing the house in 2023, were looking for the causes of a “rainwater infiltration in the roof”.
The body “was in an outbuilding which is adjoining the main house, in an inaccessible location, under the roof of this outbuilding, access to which was almost hidden”related the prosecutor. During their research, “one of the owners somewhat inadvertently accessed this cubbyhole, in which he discovered the skeletal remains”he continued.
A disappearance left unanswered
If her identity has not yet been confirmed by the Strasbourg Forensic Institute, “it is quite likely” whether it is the former owner, who disappeared under circumstances that remained mysterious in 2009, at the age of 81. Despite numerous searches, no leads had been found.
In 2023, the house was sold, three years after the death of his wife. According to Olivier Glady, “the scene of discovery of the body is suggestive of suicide”in addition to a rope found in the attic. An investigation will still be carried out to discover the circumstances and causes of death.
