“Increase the number of hours”: Minister of the Economy Antoine Armand wants the French to work more: News

In an interview for the newspaper Les Echos, the Minister of the Economy Antoine Armand pleaded for an increase in working hours on Sunday November 3. A measure which would “finance our social protection model”, he indicates.

For the new Minister of the Economy, Antoine Armand, “the objective must be to increase the number of hours worked over the year to finance our social protection model”. After Gérald Darmanin, it is now up to another figure from the majority to present the increase in the number of hours at work as a solution for the French economy, as reported by Les Echos in an interview with the minister.

If we take the indicators on weekly working hours in , France is in the middle of the European table, reports RMC. In fact, the French work 36.3 hours each week, more than our German or Italian neighbors. On the other hand, it is the number of people in employment that is lacking. According to European statistics, 74% of French people of working age have a job, compared to 81% of Germans.

Should we work more?

“I would like us to improve our proposal by starting by reducing the increase in contributions on low wages”indicates the minister during his interview. “We will have to find other efforts”which can, according to him, “take several forms, notably an increase in working hours – which remains insufficient in France”estimates Antoine Armand.

For the General Confederation of Labor (CGT), the second largest union in the private sector, an increase in the number of overtime hours would encourage mass unemployment. Indeed, “calling to increase hours and work rates is de facto accepting that unemployment is increasing”we indicate in a press release from the CGT Finances.
