Typhoon Kristine (Trami) swept through the Philippines on October 21, causing torrential rains and strong winds that caused devastating floods in several regions of the country. According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), nearly 78,000 families, or about 382,000 people, were affected in Bicol, Western Visayas, Eastern Visayas and Zamboanga Peninsula.
Camarines Sur: a hard-hit province
The province of Camarines Sur is particularly affected, with more than 253,000 families facing considerable losses. Thousands of families have sought shelter in evacuation centers, while flooded streets and submerged businesses make daily life extremely difficult.
ADRA Philippines on the front lines
The Adventist Development and Humanitarian Assistance Agency (ADRA) Philippines immediately mobilized to help affected communities. In close collaboration with local authorities in Bicol, ADRA is coordinating the distribution of food, drinking water and other basic necessities to affected families. Harrowing images, shared by ADRA Program Manager Geraldine Gutierrez, show families taking refuge on the roofs of their homes to escape rising waters. Testimonies from residents of Pili town describe the scale of the flooding and its impact on daily life and livelihoods.
A call for solidarity
On social networks, citizens like Mylce Mella, from Naga, testify to the unprecedented scale of these floods, the most significant in 30 years. Emergency services are overwhelmed by the number of requests for assistance.
Faced with this critical situation, ADRA Philippines appeals for solidarity and encourages donations to support relief efforts. Financial contributions can be made by bank transfer, via GCash or GoFundMe. These donations will help provide emergency assistance to the most vulnerable populations. ADRA reaffirms its commitment to supporting affected communities and helping them rebuild their lives after Typhoon Kristine.
