After two clear victories in the cup against Mainz 05 (4:0) and in the league against VfL Bochum (5:0), FC Bayern continued to qualify for the important Champions League game against Benfica Lisbon on Wednesday. After the 3-0 win against Union Berlin, the record champions remain at the top of the table. Leipzig can draw level on points in the evening game with a win at Borussia Dortmund, but they have significantly fewer goals: FCB have scored an incredible 32 goals in nine games so far – Leipzig only 14.
“Finally a home game again,” said coach Vincent Kompany full of anticipation. Five of Munich’s last six games took place away – most recently three in a row. Against the Berliners, Dayot Upamecano returned to the starting line-up after his thigh bruise for Eric Dier, while Konrad Laimer had to make room for Raphael Guerreiro on the right wing. Michael Olise and Kingsley Coman started offensively instead of Leroy Sané and Serge Gnabry.
FC Bayern dominates the game
The Kompany team quickly increased the tempo. In the 15th minute, Harry Kane coolly converted a penalty kick to make it 1-0. After that, the pressure from Munich continued to increase. Jordan had the best chance for the guests in the 33rd minute, but he was denied by Manuel Neuer. There was some hope in the Berlin game that they could still score a goal. But Kingsley Coman smothered this ten minutes later with a beautifully scored goal. Union didn’t have a bad away game, but they really struggled against the in-form Bayern.
FCB also established itself in the guests’ penalty area in the second half. In the 51st minute the ball landed in the Berlin goal. After a VAR check for offside, the goal was awarded – double for Kane.
The dribbling artist of the last games, Jamal Musiala, failed to score against Union. Shortly before his substitution in the 74th (Thomas Müller came on for him) he had the chance to make it 4-0, but his shot went over the goal. In the last quarter of an hour the game ran out of steam. FC Bayern managed the lead – the game now had the character of a training session. Kompany used the already decided game for the FCB youngsters and helped Adam Aznou make his Bundesliga debut. The 18-year-old Moroccan is considered a great talent.
