Bridges are built on the site in the south of Frankfurt so that dilapidated buildings can be renovated. Two clubs have to move to the Kaiserlei for this.
Frankfurt – Two sports clubs from the south of Frankfurt have to move. SV Sachsenhausen and VfL Germania 1894 are losing their home on the Mainwasen and are to move a few hundred meters further east to the Kaiserlei. The reason is Deutsche Bahn’s new construction plans for the Deutschherrn Bridge.
In a statement on Monday, the railway specified its plans. Both the Deutschherrn Bridge between the Sachsenhäuser Ufer and the European Central Bank and the adjacent Schlachthofbrückenweg between the Main and Südbahnhof urgently need to be renewed. However, the route should not be changed during construction work. That’s why the railway wants to build additional bridges next to the existing structures. This concerns a section of 1.2 kilometers in length.
Bridge construction on the Mainwasen in Frankfurt
The railway has therefore been looking for a site over the past few months on which the two new bridges will be pre-assembled. The most suitable area for this is the Mainwasen, which extends for several hundred meters along Gerbermühlstrasse. From there the bridges will be transported to their future locations.
Work is expected to begin in 2029, but Germania and SV Sachsenhausen are expected to move well before then. They will move into their new home in the Frankfurt part of the Kaiserlei, where the city once planned a multifunctional arena. Deutsche Bahn is paying for the move. There are no plans to return to the Mainwasen after the construction work has ended.
Clubs have been informed
The two clubs and Local Advisory Council 5 were informed about the plans. Mayor and head of the sports department Mike Josef (SPD) said that Germania and SV Sachsenhausen would be closely involved in the planning: “It must be ensured that a location is developed for the clubs that meets their needs in the best possible way.”
As head of the mobility department Wolfgang Siefert (Greens) emphasized, 60 percent of all long-distance trains travel via Frankfurt. This makes the infrastructure all the more important for the railway. However, a “safe and comfortable connection for cyclists and pedestrians in the Gerbermühlstrasse area must still be ensured,” said Siefert.
Mainwasen fought over again
The clubs’ premises were already up for grabs in 2019. The city considered building the new European School there. Both clubs protested vehemently against the plans, which were abandoned because the area appeared unsuitable. It is still unclear whether Germania and SV Sachsenhausen will resist again. The board of Germania wanted to discuss the railway’s plans on Monday evening, said secretary Gerhard Ruff in an interview with the FR.
