Ruben Amorim has become Manchester United’s youngest manager of the 21st century after signing a deal to replace Erik ten Hag.
Former Portuguese international Amorim began his coaching career in 2018 and quickly found success in his home country, impressing enough during a short spell at Braga to earn a high-profile move to Sporting CP in March 2020.
Just over four years later, Amorim takes his talent to the Premier League, having been appointed United’s new coach.
At 39 years and 289 days, Amorim becomes the youngest coach in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era and the youngest since Wilf McGuinness took charge in the summer of 1969, at 31 years and 288 days.
United had a number of young managers during the club’s early years, but since Sir Alex Ferguson left in 2013 they have tended to opt for more bench experience.
Amorim becomes the first United manager since Ferguson to be under 40. Interim bosses Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick were both 40, while the youngest permanent manager was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, aged 45 years and 296 days.
