Björn Soenens’ successor has been announced: Thomas De Graeve will become an America watcher

He is still waiting out the American presidential elections, after which Björn Soenens will return to Belgium. Next spring he will pass the torch to VRT NWS journalist Thomas De Graeve (41). The news service itself announced this.

After eight years of service, Björn Soenens is preparing to say goodbye to the United States. He will be present for the swearing-in ceremony of the new American president early next year, but after that Thomas De Graeve will take over the role of America reporter. De Graeve has been working at the VRT since 2007, where he worked behind the scenes on various radio and television programs.

Since 2016, he has succeeded America as a journalist for VRT NWS, and since 2021 he has been a permanent part of the foreign editorial team. He made several reports for The news in To the point. “I consider it an enormous privilege to be able to do this job. In recent years I have passionately reported news and stories from the US. It is a unique experience to now live as a correspondent in the US, that fascinating country that has such a major impact on the rest of the world. It is an opportunity that I take with great enthusiasm.”

By way of warming up, De Graeve is releasing the four-part documentary series today Torn America on VRT MAX. He looks for personal stories and talks to Americans who experience the major political issues themselves. From the streets of Philadelphia, where Americans are trying to tackle the drug crisis in their country, in churches in rural Tennessee and Texas, where a religious battle is raging, to the wall on the border with Mexico. The series will also be broadcast on VRT 1 next month.(dewo)
