“Unjustifiable violence has tarnished the image of football,” complains Bruno Retailleau

Our Ligue 1 unfortunately did not stand out for the right reasons this weekend. Homophobic chants emerged massively in the run-up to the Classic on Saturday at the Parc des Princes, “throws of projectiles” from supporters against the police on Sunday in (according to the prefect of Hérault), there was no need for them more to push the Minister of the Interior to react quickly.

As of Sunday evening, Bruno Retailleau sent a long message on his X account: “This evening again, during the Montpellier/Marseille match, unjustifiable violence has tarnished the image of football. We can no longer tolerate that every week, sport is the scene of intolerable acts. For my part, I will not tolerate it.”

This is why he announces that, in conjunction with the Minister of Sports Gil Avérous and Othman Nasrou, Secretary of State in charge of the fight against discrimination, he will bring together this week the authorities of French football “to take the necessary measures necessary for the return of order in the stadiums and on the sidelines of matches.”

Even if the visitors’ park ultimately remained empty, tensions were high at La Mosson on Sunday over each of Marseille’s five goals, since many OM fans were found all over the stadium, among the Montpellier supporters.
