Fall + hunting = dangers on the road

This year, the hunting season begins on Saturday October 19. Until January 31, there will be a great risk of encountering game on the roads of Luxembourg.

During months dedicated to hunting, drivers crossing wooded areas or traveling on roads near fields must add a risk: the collision with an animal fleeing from hunters or dogs running after game… And it’s not a road or the sound of an engine that can stop them. Also, the Ministry of Mobility, Road Safety and the Saint-Hubert Hunters’ Federation have just renewed their warnings. Knowing that the exact locations of the searches can be (preventively) consulted on www.geoportail.lu.

In addition to the road signs already in place for signals wildlife crossings, special panels are used to warn areas where hunts are taking place. We see a warning triangle with a wild boar fleeing. It is then a matter of reducing your speed.

If an animal appears on your road, drivers must reduce their speed et switch to low beambecause headlights can dazzle and immobilize animals, not to mention hindering oncoming drivers. And, be careful, behind a wild boar for example, a whole pack can follow each other… Also, you should remember to look around before picking up speed.

If the collision cannot be avoided, it is advisable to do not try to make a maneuver avoidance. On the contrary, the driver must hold the steering wheel straight and keep his car in its path by making a emergency braking.

In the event of an accident, the normal rules for this type of situation apply: wear a safety vestturn on the hazard lights, secure the accident site and inform the Police. It is not recommended to touch dead or injured animals.
