One more feminicide in 2023. A man killed his wife, before killing himself Thursday afternoon in Momy, a small village near Pau (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), the prosecution and police sources indicated this Friday.
The couple was “in the process of separating” and, according to the first elements of the investigation, “the man, armed with a knife, fatally struck his partner several times”, at their home in Momy, 25 km away. northeast of Pau. He then committed suicide in the adjoining barn, details the public prosecutor of Pau Rodolphe Jarry in a press release.
The lifeless bodies were found by two of the couple’s three children, “on their return from school”, adds the magistrate, who opened an investigation for “murder of a spouse”. The 52-year-old man left a writing asking “his children to excuse him, while explaining that he could not bring himself to live without his wife”, aged 45, again according to the prosecution.
The children were taken care of by the firefighters, then by the Pau hospital center. The victim support association APAVIM was also contacted by the Pau public prosecutor’s office to help them.
According to official figures, which only concern marital feminicides, 833 femicides were committed between 2017 and 2023. No official data is yet available concerning femicides committed since the start of the year. On average, a feminicide occurs every three days in France.
