When the flood began, on the morning of Friday October 18, residents were able to see dozens of cars jammed against each other. “Our car had been parked for a week at the end of the street and I received a call to say that my car had ended up here [à plusieurs dizaines de mètres du lieu initial, NDLR]”lamented Marianna, a disaster victim interviewed by our colleagues.

The vehicles, which were filled with water, also collided head-on with street furniture. “My car crashed into a pole and the car of another resident. It was trashed, it is completely unusable”continued the young woman, still upset by the floods of the day before. “I didn’t sleep all night, I was shocked. I was afraid it would get worse and we were afraid for our lives”she concluded.

The big clean-up has begun

Despite the fear, frustration and anger, the residents of Rive-de-Gier have already started cleaning up the city. As Le Progrès indicated, this Friday, October 18, firefighters, traders and municipal services have been on the bridge since 6 a.m. to collect debris but also to clear the roads of damaged vehicles.
