Djokovic picked up some impressive wins this week, including straight wins against Flavio Cobolli and Taylor Fritz. Fritz, who played at a crazy level throughout the hard court season, played pretty well in the match. But Djokovic was too much for him. The Serbian improved to 10-0 against the US Open finalist, and this match should make Djokovic feel somewhat prepared for Sinner.
Sinner is obviously a much better player than Fritz, and the Italian has a more complete game. It’s really not even close. But it should help Djokovic that he comes up against a strong server. Sinner is only slightly better than the American in this regard, and he hasn’t faced anyone with Djokovic’s baseline ability in some time. Sure, Medvedev is a terrific defensive player, but Djokovic is on a whole other level when it comes to turning defense into offense.
This is also a match that Djokovic is going to want a lot. There are no more Grand Slams in the season, and this is his opportunity to add another 1000-level title and prove that he is still an integral part of this new Big Three. Djokovic is also aiming for the 100th title of his career, which is a significant milestone.
I’m not sure Djokovic will end up getting the job done, but I definitely think he has a good shot. And I would be stunned if he didn’t win at least one set.
