Abou Sangaré / War in the Middle East: how to achieve a ceasefire?

From Guinea to the Film Festival, the exemplary journey of an undocumented worker

Abou Sangaré is a 23-year-old Guinean starring in the film “The Story of Souleymane” — a story that closely resembles his own. Arriving in 2018 at the age of 17, he found a home in the town of , where he obtained a professional heavy goods vehicle mechanics baccalaureate and a promise of employment in a local company. Despite this, Abou Sangaré was refused his request for regularization three times, without which he could not obtain a permanent contract. A life story similar to that of the character he plays in the film, which is released in theaters this Wednesday, October 9. “When I read the script, I had the feeling that the film was talking about me,” he explains. And for good reason: while he pedals through the streets of to deliver meals, Souleymane has to fight to obtain his papers. To do this, he must pass an interview with OFPRA, the French Office for the Protection of Refugees and Stateless Persons. For his role, Abou Sangaré received the acting prize at the Cannes Film Festival, from the Un certain regard jury. Since then, the prefecture has allowed the young Guinean to submit a new request for regularization, even though he was subject to an OQTF.

War in the Middle East: how to achieve a ceasefire?

Israel announced yesterday that it had expanded its ground offensive against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon and deployed additional troops there. At the same time, the Israeli army continues its raids in the Gaza Strip. The spokesman for Hamas’ military wing, Abou Obeida, promised a “long, painful and costly battle of attrition” for Israel. The use of this warlike rhetoric by all parties for months, as well as the recent widening of the conflict and the increase in clashes, make it difficult to achieve a ceasefire, even though it is favored by certain Western leaders. The objective of this agreement is not the end of the conflict but its suspension in order to allow humanitarian workers to work in safety and diplomacy to do its work. Two ceasefire proposals are currently on the table: the first, in progress for months, concerns Gaza and the second, more recent, on Lebanon. Faced with unsuccessful negotiations, Emmanuel Macron proposed stopping arms deliveries to Israel used in Gaza, specifically aimed at supporting the United States. Can a ceasefire succeed thanks to Western pressure to weaken Israel militarily?
