Kevin Behrens complains about ‘gay shit’ – and apologizes

Footballer Kevin Behrens launched a homophobic attack during a marketing meeting. The club confirmed the incident. Now the player speaks.

Kevin Behrens had to complete a mandatory test for football professionals. The striker, who works for VfL Wolfsburg, was supposed to sign merchandise for fans during a signing session. Signed items are for sale, competitions or club fundraisers. This is the daily life of professionals.

At the end of September, a scandal broke out, as reported by “Sport Bild”. When Behrens was asked to sign a special jersey for diversity and tolerance, he repeatedly refused. The phrase “I won’t sign such gay shit” was uttered, as reported by club employees. The club logo, jersey number, sponsor and player names of the special jersey were designed in the colors of the rainbow.

After the defeat, the striker was summoned to sports director Sebastian Schindzielorz, where he credibly assured that he had nothing against homosexuals.

VfL Wolfsburg confirms incident with Kevin Behrens

The club has now confirmed the incident. “At an internal meeting there were statements that were not in line with the position of VfL Wolfsburg. The incident was immediately dealt with internally,” the club wrote. He continues: “VfL Wolfsburg emphasizes that it is aware of its social responsibility. The club and its collaborators defend diversity and tolerance; Core values such as respect, honesty and openness have always been firmly anchored in the club’s philosophy.

The Autostadt factory club is indeed one of the pioneers in the fight for diversity and against homophobia. Wolfsburg was the first professional club in Germany to display the colors of the rainbow on the captain’s jersey or armband.

Behrens, rarely used in the sport under new coach Ralph Hasenhüttl, publicly apologized. “My spontaneous statements were absolutely not acceptable. I would like to apologize for that. The matter has been clearly discussed internally and I ask for your understanding that I do not wish to comment further on this matter,” he said. VfL did not provide any information on possible sanctions. All we know is that the professional eventually signed the jersey and is still part of the team.
