Zverev, bamboo blow in Shanghai

This Wednesday, during the round of 16 of the Masters 1000 in Shanghai, Alexander Zverev was beaten in two sets by David Goffin, who will therefore challenge Taylor Fritz in the next round.

New sensation this Wednesday during the Masters 1000 in Shanghai. After the elimination a little earlier of Grigor Dimitrov (against Jakub Mensik) and, to a lesser extent, that of Tommy Paul (against Tomas Machac), it was above all Alexander Zverev who took the door in the 8th finals . Indeed, in China, the German was beaten in his second match by David Goffin, who won in two sets (6-4, 7-5) and 1h57 of play.

Faced with the 3rd in the world, not at his best physically, the Belgian assured and knew how to raise his level of play when necessary. Thus, at 3-3 in the first round then at 5-5 in the second, the one who is 66th in the ATP ranking made the break against Zverev and then did not break down after taking the advantage. For the first time in two years, Goffin has a member of the top 10 and will see the next round.

Goffin will find Fritz

Precisely, in the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters 1000, the latter will have the right to a new serious client, in the person of Taylor Fritz. Indeed, in the last 8th final on the program this Wednesday, the American largely dominated Holger Rune in two sets (6-1, 6-2) and less than an hour of play (56 minutes to be precise). After offering himself Matteo Berrettini and Jiri Lehecka, the young Dane was no match this time and showed himself to be completely powerless against the recent finalist of the US Open.

Thanks to two breaks obtained in each round, the latter quickly stood out on the scoreboard and lost no time en route during his 8th final. At the gates of the last four in China, Fritz will therefore find Goffin against whom he has not played since 2021 on the main circuit. More than three years ago, the American won in three rounds in Doha.
