“I played with my face”, Paula Badosa, accused of racism, withdraws from the Wuhan tournament

Paula Badosa is at the heart of the turmoil. The Spanish player was playing in the WTA 1000 tournament in Wuhan, China, when she was caught in a bad buzz where she was accused of racism.

The timing of the package raises questions

Her coach Pol Toledo published a photo on her Instagram account in which her player mimed slanted eyes, using chopsticks. Seeing the turn it was taking, the 15th player in the world apologized in the comments of the photo, which has since been deleted. “I never thought it would be interpreted this way. We didn’t even imitate Asians. I played with my face and my wrinkles. I love Asia, one of my favorite people, and I have many Asian friends. They are the nicest”she wrote.

Initially, Badosa was scheduled to face Australian Ajla Tomljanovic this Tuesday, October 8, in the second round of the Chinese tournament. Except that she finally withdrew, officially due to gastroenteritis, only a few hours after her bad buzz, in disconcerting timing to say the least.
